Having a chorale served a number of functions:
1. If you look through the sheet music - alphabetized by composer - you’ll note some of the professors composed works - Lasser, Boyle, Conte. While at French School we learned how to sing while conducting, changing meter practically ever bar is NOT something we were taught!!! Good practice.
2. Toward the end, each of the conducting students got to step up to the podium to conduct the chorale. Great practice!
3. Thanks to French School the chorale adopted singing while conducting time. But we were also asked to conduct with the right hand while tapping out rhythms with the left hand, and I CANNOT do that worth squat!!! It will take years to learn to do that… Advanced levels of ear training in Juilliard now includes all of this rhythmic work.
4. Last but not least - applying everything we learned in counterpoint, keyboard, musicianship, and analysis classes.
