20160923 - Channel Surfing

The goal of this assignment was to come up with 5 very different set of fragments, then run them through a blender to create the final product. We were also supposed to start by crafting the third movement, then second, then first, in the hopes that we would be forced to rework various parts to create a cohesive whole in the end.

This is the original set of 5 fragments I built for this idea of channel surfing in front of a TV.

20161030 - Lullaby of the Doomed

This is the first cut of the slower second movement.

"Sweet dreams, little ones" she crooned, as nuclear winter blanketed the Earth.

20161120 - The Fawn and the Alligator

This was a study in contrasts using a more declarative style. If there is one failure I learned from this assignment, it's that short, choppy phrases do not play to the strengths of stringed instruments. Unfortunately, that's what I envisioned when I thought of a fawn bouncing along.

This is one of the dilemmas with writing for an ensemble and using only Sibelius initially. No computer-generated playback can ever reflect the full richness and challenges of what human players produce. How I would adapt this to the strings a little better? I'm still not sure yet, even one year later.
